stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Ethan had told me he worked late on October 3. I remembered the evening because I had ordered dinner for two, waited until nearly nine, and finally eaten alone while he apologized over the phone.
The photograph showed him with Vanessa at a restaurant overlooking the water.
His jacket was draped over the back of his chair. His tie was loosened. Vanessa leaned toward him with an expression I had never seen her wear around me.
But the photograph didn’t show a kiss.
It didn’t show an embrace.
It showed two people sitting at a table, and a hand covering another hand.
“Don’t jump to conclusions,” Chloe said gently.
“I don’t want to.”
Ryan took the photograph and studied it.
“This could have been taken before he rejected her.”
“Or after,” I replied.
Margaret folded her arms. “You have a wedding in a few hours. You deserve the truth before you walk down that aisle.”
