After getting out of prison, I had nowhere to go, so an elderly woman hired me. She asked, “Why were you in prison?” And then…

For the first time since my imprisonment, a possibility I’d almost abandoned began taking shape.

“I can’t pay him.”

“Talk to him first.”

Then Opal retrieved her cellphone.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

She showed me a message she’d received the previous evening.

An unidentified woman had offered her three thousand dollars to dismiss me immediately, claiming I was dangerous.

I recognized the sender’s number.

Monica.

Even more disturbing was the attached photograph of my former house. A For Sale sign stood prominently in its yard.

Underneath, the sender had written:

“Before Rebecca finds out what we did with the deed, we need to get her out of Ohio.”

Part 2

“Does your sister know where you work?” Opal asked.

“She shouldn’t.”

I examined the message again. Although Monica had sent it from her personal number, I couldn’t tell who had photographed my house.
