After getting out of prison, I had nowhere to go, so an elderly woman hired me. She asked, “Why were you in prison?” And then…

They hadn’t simply reproduced my signature.

They appeared to have transformed a genuine, restricted authorization into the basis of another fraudulent transaction.

Unless we challenged it through proper legal channels, I risked losing the last property still registered in my name.

Part 3

Sleep eluded me that night.

I remained at Opal’s kitchen table, studying the deed while my untouched coffee gradually cooled.

Around two in the morning, Opal appeared.

“Are you going to take the money?”

I shook my head.

“No. But I’m not going to let them do whatever they want while I wait for someone to defend me.”

I wrote three questions on a blank sheet: Who had used the authorization? Which transaction had it enabled? And why did this deed reference the same number as my earlier limited document?

At sunrise, I telephoned Helen.

She instructed me to reject Monica’s proposed agreement and send photographs of every page she’d left.
