I picked up the paper and saw the result of a test for a sexually transmitted infection. The initial screening test had come back positive.

I felt my hands turn ice-cold.

“Robert, we need to speak to the doctor. This isn’t a final diagnosis yet. Let’s wait for the confirmatory tests.”

But he wouldn’t even listen to me.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know anything!” he shouted. “I’ve never been with another woman! So you must have cheated on me!”

I stared at him, unable to believe my ears.

“Robert, I’ve never cheated on you. In all 35 years of our marriage, I’ve never once given you a reason to doubt me.”

But he could no longer hear my words.
