I remained silent.
“I can’t take back what I said,” he continued. “But if you let me, I want to spend the rest of my life proving to you that I’ve learned from my mistake.”
I looked at the man with whom I had spent most of my life.
I still remembered his accusations. I remembered sitting alone in the kitchen, crying after speaking with our daughter, and packing my suitcase without knowing whether I would ever return home.
But I also saw what had happened afterward.
Robert hadn’t simply asked for forgiveness. He had begun taking responsibility for his behavior.
“I can’t promise that everything will be the way it was before,” I finally said.
He nodded.
“I understand.”
“I will need time. And if we try again, I want us to have one rule: no accusations without a conversation, and no decisions made in anger.”
