“Ben.”
Diane caught his arm.
I couldn’t make sense of the sentence.
“Come on. Not here.”
I stared at her.
“You know what this is about, don’t you?”
Her eyes dropped to Evelyn.
That scared me more than Ben’s anger.
“Tell me, Diane.”
Her eyes dropped to Evelyn.
She looked at her son.
“Let’s go, sweetheart.”
I shifted Evie higher against my chest.
“No. You don’t get to walk out after saying that. Ben, look at your daughter.”
He stopped at the doorway but didn’t turn around.
Then he left our hospital room.
“Ben, look at your daughter.”
Diane followed.
The door closed behind them.
Evie started crying.
I pressed my cheek to her head and stared at the doorway.
Whatever had just happened, they both understood it.
And somehow, I was the only person in the room who still didn’t understand.
Evie started crying.
