“He never met Hazel.”
Hazel squeezed Lydia’s hand.
“And when my husband passed away three years ago, I stood beside another grave thinking my father had been gone for more than a decade.”
Arthur looked up.
Lydia saw something in his expression.
Recognition.
Her stomach tightened.
“He knew, didn’t he?”
Arthur hesitated.
“Yes.”
The answer cut deeper than she expected.
“He knew Mark was gone?”
“Yes.”
“And he still didn’t come?”
Arthur’s voice softened.
“He tried.”
Lydia turned sharply toward him.
“What does that mean?”
“He reached Portland. But he believed someone had followed him.”
Lydia shook her head.
“You expect me to believe my father spent fourteen years hiding because somebody might have been watching?”
Arthur looked toward the rear of the cabin.
“That woman who took my wallet is one reason I do.”
