The woman from 14A.
She had somehow come several rows forward without Lydia noticing.
Her hand stretched toward the photograph.
Hazel picked it up faster.
The woman froze.
“Give me that.”
Her tone was no longer annoyed.
It was frightened.
Lydia stood.
“Why?”
The woman stared at the photograph in Hazel’s hand.
Then at Lydia.
“Because it doesn’t belong to you.”
The elderly man beside them spoke for the first time.
“Actually, it was inside my wallet.”
The woman stepped back.
A flight attendant approached, sensing the tension.
Hazel quietly handed the picture to Lydia.
And Lydia’s entire world changed.
A Man Who Should Not Exist
Two men stood outside a coffee shop in the photograph.
One was the elderly passenger.
The other had silver hair, a weathered face, and the same crooked smile Lydia saw every morning when she looked in the mirror.
Her father.
Graham Carver.
