A seven-year-old girl told the desk officer, “Daddy put something inside my sister’s belly.” Then she clarified, “He made her swallow it and told her not to tell anyone.”

Violet answered what she could through her tears. When she didn’t know, Nora answered only if the paramedic looked directly at her. Neither girl guessed. Neither girl made up details.

The paramedic checked Violet’s vitals—her heart rate was dangerously low, her pupils sluggish—and prepared her for immediate transport to the pediatric emergency department.

Nora refused to let go of her sister’s hand.

“They stay together,” Paul stated firmly.

The paramedic nodded without hesitation. “Understood. Both ride in the rig.”

Richard heard the exchange through the glass and pounded his fist against the pane. “You can’t take my children anywhere without my consent! I’m a licensed physician!”

Paul stepped toward the entrance, but kept his hand away from the lock. “The children requested police protection,” he said clearly. “Medical evaluation comes first.”

Richard held up his phone as if the screen carried legal authority. “I have the prescription records right here!”
