“Oh my God…”
“Don’t pick her up yet!”
Jamie’s voice cracked through the room. Claire froze.
So did I.
“Jamie,” I said. “What happened?”
He looked up. His hands were still shaking.
But his voice was calm.
“Call 911.”
“What happened?”
I grabbed my phone.
While I gave the dispatcher our address, I watched my brother do something I’d never seen him do.
He was whispering to himself, the way he did with recipes.
“Face down. Five hits. Check mouth.”
He didn’t panic. He moved one step at a time, like he’d done it a hundred times.
Then Sophie coughed. A small, wet, awful sound.
“What class?”
She took a breath.
Then she started to cry.
It was the best sound I’d ever heard.
The paramedics arrived within minutes. One of them knelt beside Sophie.
“What was she choking on?”
Then she started to cry.
