A tired father.
A frightened boy.
One plate of eggs.
One pancake.
And a waitress who had quietly helped them survive a difficult season.
Michael picked up his fork.
He took a bite of pancake.
Then laughed through his tears.
“Still the same.”
Mom smiled.
“Why change something that works?”
That Sunday became the beginning of something.
Not a perfect ending.
Michael didn’t suddenly turn into the kindest man in town.
People rarely change completely over one breakfast.
But he started trying.
The following Tuesday, he came back.
No suit.
Just jeans and a blue shirt.
He sat in Mom’s section.
When she approached, he smiled.
“Morning, Darlene.”
“Morning, Michael.”
“Eggs over easy.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?”
He laughed.
“Whatever way the cook makes them is fine.”
Mom chuckled.
“Don’t go getting sentimental on me.”
When he finished, he paid his bill.
Left an ordinary, generous tip.
