A man kept manspreading into my plane seat for hours—when he returned from the restroom, he shouted, “What the hell did you do?!”

And in none of those forty times have I said the words there was a girl on his other side.

She is not in it. There is no room for her in a two-minute story with a laugh in it, because the moment she is in it the story has a hole where the good bit should be.

That is not an accident of telling. I took her out in the first version, in a function room, four days after she said that to me on a walkway.

What this is actually about.

Ken.

My husband died in 2016 and he was a good man and he is not the villain of anything.

And the chair line — she’d apologise to a chair — was his, and he said it fondly, and everybody in my family says it now, and I have said it myself in the last two paragraphs.

And in thirty-four years there was one thing I never said to him.
