My Husband Said the Giant Hole in the Wall Was Just an Accident, Then Our Daughter Pulled Me Aside and Told Me the Truth

“I went to work with a wall.”

I pointed toward the opening.

“I came home without one.”

He sighed.

“I’m tired. Let’s eat. I’ll explain later.”

Before I could argue, our twelve-year-old daughter, Maddie, came downstairs.

Maddie notices everything.

Always has.

When she was six and we told her we might get a dog, her first reaction wasn’t excitement.

She asked what breed, how big it would get, where it would sleep, who would feed it, and whether anyone in the house had allergies.

She was six.

So when Maddie walked into the living room, saw a giant hole in the wall, and said absolutely nothing, I

knew immediately that she had already seen it.

And I knew something else.

She didn’t want to talk about it in front of Brian.

“Were you home when Dad did this?” I asked.

Before she answered, Brian said,

“She was upstairs most of the afternoon.”

Maddie glanced at him.

Then at me.

“Yeah.”

She grabbed yogurt and went back upstairs.

That look stayed with me.

At dinner, she was quieter than usual.

Every time I brought up the wall, Maddie watched Brian before responding.

Brian kept redirecting the conversation.

Work.

Weather.

A restaurant someone had recommended.
Anything except the missing section of our living room.

After dinner, Brian went downstairs to put away tools.

I went to our bedroom.

Five minutes later, Maddie knocked.

She stepped inside and quietly shut the door.

“Is Dad downstairs?”

“Yes.”

She sat on the edge of the bed.

she lowered her voice.

“Mom, Dad wasn’t fixing an outlet.”

My stomach tightened.

“What was he doing?”

“He was searching for something.”

I stared at her.

“In the wall?”

She nodded.

“I came downstairs around eleven for a snack. He already had the wall open.”

She paused.

“He had a flashlight.”

“What was he looking at?”

“The space behind the drywall. He kept moving insulation around.”

“Did you ask him?”

“He said it was electrical.”

Maddie shook her head.

“But it didn’t look like he was checking wires.”
