PART 2 — THE MAN BEHIND THE OLD SUIT

Daniel stood at the microphone holding the black envelope.

Nobody laughed anymore.

Not even Melissa.

The church had become so quiet that I could hear the faint ticking of the clock above the entrance.

Daniel pulled a document from the envelope.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then he looked at me.

“Grace,” [he said, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”]

My heart began pounding.

“What is that?” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he turned toward the congregation.

“For the last eight months, many of you have seen me sleeping on benches, walking through the streets, wearing old clothes and asking strangers for nothing more than a cup of coffee.”

People stared at him.

“That wasn’t because I had nowhere to go.”

A murmur moved through the church.

Daniel continued.

“I had somewhere to go.”

He held up the document.

“I had everything.”

Melissa frowned.

Claire’s smile disappeared.

Janet sat forward.

Daniel took a breath.

“Three years ago, I owned a successful property management company.”

Someone gasped.

I stared at him.

Daniel had never told me anything about a company.

Never.

He had never mentioned money.

Never talked about wealth.

Never behaved like someone who had ever owned anything valuable.

“I owned several properties across Birmingham,” he continued. “I had employees. I had investments. I had a house.”

He paused.

“Then my father died.”

The room became still again.

“My father left me a large estate.”

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“Because I needed to know whether someone could love me without knowing what I had.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“But why pretend to be homeless?”

He looked down.

“Because money changed everyone around me.”

He explained that after his father’s death, relatives he barely knew suddenly appeared.

Old friends returned.

Business partners became overly friendly.

People who had ignored him for years suddenly wanted something from him.

One person even tried to convince him to sign away part of the inheritance.
