A Black nanny marries a homeless man. Guests laugh at their wedding until he takes the microphone and says this..

PART 1 — EVERYONE LAUGHED AT MY WEDDING

My name is Grace Johnson, and I will never forget the sound of people laughing on my wedding day.

It was a warm Saturday morning in Birmingham, England.

The church bells rang softly as people filled the wooden pews. Sunlight came through the stained-glass windows, painting colored patterns across the floor.

It should have been one of the happiest mornings of my life.

Instead, I could hear whispers everywhere.

People were looking at me.

Then they looked at my dress.

Or, more accurately, what I was wearing instead of a wedding dress.

I was wearing my simple nanny uniform zaml .

A white blouse.

A dark skirt.

The same clothes I had worn countless times while taking care of other people’s children.

I couldn’t afford a wedding gown.

I had spent most of my life making sure other people’s families were comfortable while barely having enough money to make my own life comfortable.

But that morning, I didn’t care.

Because I was marrying the man I loved.

Daniel Brooks stood beside the altar.

He was tall, with a rough beard and tired eyes. His suit was old and badly worn. One sleeve was slightly loose, and his shoes had cracks along the sides.

To everyone in that church, he looked exactly like what they had already decided he was.

A homeless man.

Someone who had somehow convinced a kind-hearted woman to marry him.

I heard laughter behind me.

My three closest friends, Melissa, Claire, and Janet, were sitting together.

They weren’t even trying to whisper quietly.

“I told her not to marry him,” Melissa said.

Claire giggled.

“Grace deserves better.”

Janet looked Daniel up and down.

“This wedding is a joke.”

I pretended not to hear them.

But I did.

Every word.

I felt each one.

When the pastor began the ceremony, I held Daniel’s rough hand.

His fingers were cold.

He squeezed mine gently.

“Are you all right?” he whispered.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

But inside, I was falling apart.

The pastor looked at the congregation.

“If anyone has a reason why these two should not be married, speak now.”
