My hands shook as I placed the pregnancy test on the bathroom sink. I was still in tenth grade. I had no money, no plan, and no idea how I was going to raise a child.
But nothing frightened me more than telling my parents.
My mother stared at my stomach as if I had brought something shameful into our home. My father did not ask whether I was safe or whether the baby’s father had abandoned me. He simply pointed toward the front door.

When labor began, Rosa took me to a small private clinic. There were no family members waiting outside. No one held my hand except Rosa.
The delivery was difficult.
I remember hearing one baby cry.
Then I heard a nurse shout that there was another child.
Twins.
I had not known because I had received almost no medical care during my pregnancy.
