Two Little Girls Stopped to Help a Stranger in the Park—and Changed the Way a Billionaire Saw the World

The first person to notice that I needed help was a five-year-old girl carrying a pink backpack.

I remember the small hole near the toe of her shoe. As I lay on the pavement, struggling to remain conscious, it was one of the few details I could still make out clearly. The trees above me blurred into patches of green and gray, and the familiar sounds of the city seemed to come from far away.

The little girl dropped her backpack beside the path.

“Please wake up,” she whispered.

Her sister stood a few steps behind her, holding tightly to the hem of her dress.

“Lily, he’s not talking.”

“I know, Emma. We need to get someone.”

Lily turned toward the path and called as loudly as she could.
