PART 1: THE WOMAN HE THOUGHT WAS WEAK
The beer poured down my hair like freezing rain, but the sound of my brother-in-law laughing hurt far more than the cold liquid soaking my dress.
Derek stood over me in my mother-in-law’s backyard, holding an empty can and smiling like a man who had just performed the funniest joke in history.
“Oops, looks like the princess melted,” he announced.
Around the barbecue table, several relatives exchanged uncomfortable glances, while my mother-in-law, Diane, laughed from her favorite patio chair.
“Claire, don’t make such a face because it’s only beer,” she said.
I slowly placed my napkin on the table and looked at the man who had deliberately humiliated me in front of his entire family.
For five years, I had endured Derek’s jokes, his insults, and his constant attempts to make my husband feel inferior.
He called Ryan weak because he treated me with respect, and he called me fragile because I refused to answer cruelty with cruelty.
