For a few.s. seconds he didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

Then he put his hands over his face.<\/p>\n

Please, leave things like that until morning.<\/p>\n

\u2013 No. You brought a stranger into our home and now you\u2019re asking me to pretend I don\u2019t notice anything?<\/p>\n

He is not an unknown.<\/p>\n

His words made me crumble.<\/p>\n

Then who is it?<\/p>\n

Daniel lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

Someone I thought I would never see again.<\/p>\n

I felt a cold shiver.<\/p>\n

My husband slowly went out of the head.<\/p>\n

A few seconds later, the silence lay again.<\/p>\n

Where did you want me to take you? Answered Daniel. After twenty-five years you appear in front of me and you tell me that everything I was told was a lie.<\/p>\n

I held my breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t defend her.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not defending her.<\/p>\n

A break followed.<\/p>\n

Then Daniel said something that made me goosebumps:<\/p>\n

All my life I thought you were dead.<\/p>\n

Who was supposed to be dead?<\/p>\n

Michael slowly gets up from the table.<\/p>\n

Daniel looks at him, then at me.<\/p>\n

\u2013 My father\u2019s brother.<\/p>\n

I blinked puzzled.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Your uncle?<\/p>\n

Michael was smiling sadly.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how you were taught to believe.<\/p>\n

Daniel was tightening his jaw.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Tell Her.<\/p>\n

Michael took out of his pocket an old wallet and, from him, a bent photo.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s stretching it out.<\/p>\n

In the photo were two young men.<\/p>\n

One was Daniel\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

The other was Michael.<\/p>\n

They looked striking.<\/p>\n

On the back of the photo was handwritten:<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert and Michael, 1992.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were brothers,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Yes.<\/p>\n

Daniel sits down.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father told me that Michael died in an accident when I was ten years old.<\/p>\n

Michael rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n

That was simpler than the truth.<\/p>\n

Then he raises his eyes to Daniel.<\/p>\n

Your father made me disappear from the family.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Michael is hesitant.<\/p>\n

Because of your mother.<\/p>\n

The room seemed to shrink.<\/p>\n

Daniel became pale.<\/p>\n

What was my mother connected to?<\/p>\n

Michael pulled out of his bag an old, elastic-bound-connected map.<\/p>\n

Inside were letters.<\/p>\n

Dozens.<\/p>\n

Some yellow. Some yellow.<\/p>\n

Daniel took the first.<\/p>\n

I saw his expression change as he read.<\/p>\n

What does it say?<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t answer me.<\/p>\n

He handed me the letter.<\/p>\n

It was addressed to Michael.<\/p>\n

Signed by Daniel\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t come to the house. Robert suspects. If he finds the truth about Daniel, he will destroy us all.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt my breathtaking.<\/p>\n

Daniel lifts his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u2013 What truth?<\/p>\n

Michael had tears in his eyes.<\/p>\n

I am your biological father.<\/p>\n

No one said anything.<\/p>\n

Only the rain was heard hitting the window.<\/p>\n

Daniel burst into a short laugh, devoid of any cheerfulness.<\/p>\n

\u2013 No.<\/p>\n

Michael is not moving.<\/p>\n

I am so sorry.<\/p>\n

\u2013 No!<\/p>\n

Daniel is getting up.<\/p>\n

My father raised me. He taught me to ride a bike. He took me to school. He\u2026<\/p>\n

His voice was broken.<\/p>\n

Michael nodded.<\/p>\n

\u2013 I know. And I\u2019m not trying to take his place.<\/p>\n

The truth is surfacing slowly.<\/p>\n

Many years ago, before Daniel\u2019s parents got married, his mother had a brief relationship with Michael.<\/p>\n

Then he chose Robert.<\/p>\n

When Daniel was born, Robert thought the boy was his.<\/p>\n

Years later, he found out the truth.<\/p>\n

He had not divorced.<\/p>\n

Instead, he had asked his brother to disappear for good.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctors told me I probably have a few months left. I don\u2019t have a wife. I don\u2019t have children. And I realized that I would die after spending almost my whole life keeping a promise made to a man who is no longer alive.<\/p>\n

Then take out a second envelope.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t come just for that.<\/p>\n

Put it on the table.<\/p>\n

After Robert\u2019s death, I received this letter.<\/p>\n

Daniel immediately recognized his father\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n

His hands were shaking when he unwrapped the envelope.<\/p>\n

The letter was short.<\/p>\n

Robert confessed that he regretted the decision.<\/p>\n

He said that, regardless of blood, Daniel had been his son and he would always remain his son.<\/p>\n

But he wrote something else:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf one day you have the courage I didn\u2019t have, tell him the truth. I don\u2019t want my hatred to become his legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel has read that phrase three times.<\/p>\n

Then he sat down and started crying.<\/p>\n

I had never seen him cry like this before.<\/p>\n

Michael didn\u2019t come close.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t try to hug him.<\/p>\n

He just stood in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to call me a father,\u201d he said. I\u2019m not asking you anything. I just wanted you to see me once before I left.<\/p>\n

Daniel raises his eyes.<\/p>\n

Why do you know where the glasses are?<\/p>\n

For the first time, Michael was really smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause this apartment was your grandmother\u2019s.<\/p>\n

I looked to Daniel.<\/p>\n

He seemed as surprised as I was.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father told me he bought it after I was born.<\/p>\n

\u2013 No. This is where you and I grew up. The clock by the window was our father\u2019s. Robert kept it.<\/p>\n

Then all the strange things from the previous evening made sense.<\/p>\n

Michael didn\u2019t look at the house like a man trying to find out something about us.<\/p>\n

He looked at her like a man who had returned home.<\/p>\n

That morning, Michael didn\u2019t leave.<\/p>\n

He stayed for breakfast.<\/p>\n

I thought the truth was going to take my father.<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

But he can\u2019t. The man who raised me is my father. It\u2019s just that now I know there was someone else who lived the whole life with the consequences of that story.<\/p>\n

Michael died almost a year later, not a few months later, as doctors had estimated.<\/p>\n
