“Yes, Your Honor,” I answered, my voice trembling as I opened my thick paper folder.
I handed over bank records, state notices, and printed text messages. One of Russell’s messages read: You need to learn how to manage your own budget instead of expecting me to constantly fix your life.
Directly beneath it, my printed response read: I am only asking you to send the child support that Toby is legally entitled to receive.
Judge Leonard carefully read each line. Seeing the situation slipping away, Benedict quickly produced a printed email chain, claiming it proved I had proudly refused Russell’s offers to purchase new clothes for Toby.
“This clearly shows her stubborn pride getting in the way of her child’s basic needs,” Benedict claimed.
I immediately recognized the email thread. “That printout is missing the most important part of the conversation,” I said firmly.
Judge Leonard looked down at me. “Do you have the original, complete email exchange available?”
I reached into my purse, pulled out my phone, located the original thread, and handed it to the court bailiff.
The judge read the unedited email aloud for everyone in the courtroom. Russell’s original message said: I will buy Toby a whole new wardrobe if you sign a written statement admitting you cannot provide basic necessities for him. Having that admission will make the upcoming custody trial much smoother for me.
My complete response beneath it read: We do not need a single thing from you if your help requires me to humiliate myself. Just send the standard child support you already owe us.
Judge Leonard’s expression turned cold. “Mr. Welch, the printout your client provided to this court deliberately altered the context of the conversation.”
Benedict reddened and glanced toward Russell. “I presented the evidence exactly as it was provided to me by my client, Your Honor.”
“Then I strongly suggest you verify your client’s evidence before bringing it into my courtroom again,” the judge warned.
