The animal could approach because it is curious. It might investigate the person’s movement, posture, smell, or lack of response. It could also be reacting to the person’s previous relationship with the animal or to the sudden disruption of the environment.

Touching or holding a person does not necessarily mean the gorilla understands that the person is experiencing a medical emergency in the same way a human does.

However, the behavior may still be socially meaningful.
