MY HUSBAND HIT ME ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT—SO I WALKED OUT AND DECIDED TO DISMANTLE HIS ENTIRE LIFE

He had brought me coffee when I worked late.

He had listened when I talked about my dreams.

He had told me that money didn’t matter to him.

I believed him.

That was my mistake.

Florence’s voice rose sharply.

“Wash it.”

“No.”

Her mouth fell open.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

She began shouting.

She called me ungrateful.

She called me spoiled.

She accused me of pretending to be humble during our courtship while secretly planning to control her son.

Then Jonathan came rushing into the room after hearing her screaming.

“Tell your new wife to stop acting like an entitled princess,” Florence spat.

Jonathan looked at the bucket.

Then he looked at me.

His eyes were glassy from drinking.

“Charlotte, listen to my mom. Don’t start trouble on our first night.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“If the laundry matters so much to you, you can wash it yourself.”

Florence’s face became furious.

“Put her in her place!”

Jonathan stepped toward me.

“Don’t.”

He grabbed my arm.

His fingers dug into my skin so hard that my heels slipped across the floor.

“Don’t you ever talk back to my mother again.”

“Take your hand off me.”

He didn’t.

Instead, he struck me across the face.

For a moment, everything went silent.

I tasted blood.

Florence stood behind him with a satisfied expression.

“That’s how you teach a proud woman.”

I didn’t cry.

I didn’t scream.

I simply looked at Jonathan.

And in that moment, the last illusion disappeared.

The kind, patient man I had loved for two years had never existed.

At least, not in the way I had believed.

I slowly bent down and picked up the bucket.

Florence smiled.

She thought I was finally going to obey.

She was wrong.

I raised the bucket with both hands.

Then I dumped every drop of cold, gray, soapy water directly over Jonathan’s head.

The smile vanished from Florence’s face.

Jonathan stood frozen.

Water streamed down his hair, his face, and the expensive shirt he’d worn for our wedding celebration.
