My Fiancé Left the Phone Line Open One Day Before Our Wedding, and I Heard Him Tell His Mother He Planned to Take My House, My Savings, and Then Get Rid of Me. So I Changed a Few Details About the Ceremony—and When the Final Wedding Gift Appeared on the Screen, Nathan Learned He Had Never Been the One Running the Con.

Grace made a broken sound.

I reached for her hand.

Melissa continued.

“The people I’m investigating are dangerous financially. I don’t know if they are physically dangerous, but I’ve started receiving calls.”

My heart hammered.

She described Ashford.

Linda.

Nicholas.

The fraud.

Then she said:

“Yesterday Nicholas Bennett approached me outside my office.”

Rebecca leaned toward the laptop.

“He knows I’m tracing him. He offered me money to alter my findings.”

Melissa laughed bitterly.

“I told him to go to hell.”

Grace began crying.

Then Melissa looked directly into the camera.

“If he comes near my daughters, my sister, or my nephew, understand something: it will not be coincidence.”

My legs gave out.

I sat down.

The video continued.

Melissa held up a document.

“I’ve copied everything. The original evidence will go to federal investigators if I can finish tracing the accounts.”

She glanced toward the door.

“I also learned Linda and Nicholas sometimes keep targeting people connected to former investigations years later if they believe evidence was withheld.”

Then Melissa said the sentence that changed the meaning of my entire relationship.

“Nicholas never forgets a family.”

The video ended.

No one spoke.

The sun was rising outside.

My wedding day had begun.

At seven fifteen, two federal investigators were sitting in my living room.

Rebecca had made calls.

The investigators did not arrive because we mentioned Melissa’s death.

They arrived because the financial records on the flash drive potentially connected Nathan and Linda to unresolved fraud.

One of them, Agent Alvarez, watched Melissa’s video twice.

Then he asked for the original drive.

Grace hesitated.

I took her hand.

“It’s okay.”

She surrendered it.

Alvarez looked at me.

“Mrs. Walker, I strongly recommend you cancel today’s event.”

“Why?”

“If Bennett realizes you know who he is, we can’t predict his reaction.”

“I don’t want him in my home.”

“He won’t be.”

“I don’t want him near my daughters.”

“He won’t be.”

“I want him arrested.”

“That decision depends on probable cause and warrants, not on what either of us wants.”
