Then I stood.
Slowly.
My knees felt loose.
I went into the bathroom and locked the door.
Under the bright vanity lights, my face looked unfamiliar.
The skin beneath my eye was already darkening. My lower lip had split near one corner. A tiny line of dried blood reached my chin.
I stared at myself.
For years, Victoria had told me I was overly sensitive.
Adrian said I remembered arguments incorrectly.
When he punched a hole through the pantry door eighteen months earlier, he said I had provoked him.
When he grabbed my wrist hard enough to leave finger-shaped marks the previous winter, he said he had only been stopping me from walking away while he spoke.
When he threw my phone into the pool, he called it an accident.
Every event had been individually explainable.
Together they formed a language.
I had only recently learned how to read it.
I knelt beside the sink.
One floor tile near the cabinet had been loose since a plumbing repair two years earlier.
Adrian hated home maintenance and never noticed.
I lifted it.
Beneath it lay a cheap black phone wrapped inside a washcloth.
My burner.
I switched it on.
Four unread messages appeared.
One from my attorney, Rebecca Sloan.
One from Mara Chen, my financial adviser.
One from Daniel Reeve, the private investigator I had hired eight weeks earlier.
And a second message from Daniel marked urgent.
I opened his first.
FINAL EVIDENCE PACKAGE COMPLETE.
Then the second.
I FOUND THE ORIGINAL EMAIL CHAIN. CALL ME FROM SAFE PHONE ONLY.
My pulse jumped.
The original chain.
I did not know exactly what that meant.
Not yet.
But Daniel had spent weeks tracing shell companies, property records, deleted corporate registrations and financial connections Adrian thought were invisible.
If he called something “the original chain,” it mattered.
I photographed my face beneath the harsh bathroom lights.
Front.
Left side.
Right side.
Split lip.
Swollen cheek.
Then I recorded a thirty-second video stating the date, time and what had happened.
My voice barely sounded like mine.
I sent everything to Rebecca.
Three dots appeared almost immediately.
