My Husband Beat Me for Refusing to Live With My Mother in Law.

That sentence surprised people.

It surprised me too.

We are taught that love is the grand defense.

He loved you.

She meant well.

Family is complicated.

Marriage takes work.

But love is not a permit.

Love does not make deception smaller.

It does not make bruises less purple.

It does not convert control into concern.

Adrian wrote me one letter after the divorce became final.

Rebecca asked whether I wanted it.

I said no.

Then I changed my mind.

The envelope remained unopened for four days.

When I finally read it, there were no excuses.

No attack on Victoria.

No request for money.

He wrote:

The first time I saw you, I already knew too much about you.

The second time, I wanted to know things my mother hadn’t told me.

By the third date, I was terrified because I understood that someday I would have to tell you how the first one happened.

I kept waiting for a perfect moment.

Then waiting became lying.

Lying became protecting the lie.

And eventually I became someone who thought protecting what I wanted mattered more than protecting you.

What I did to you that night has no excuse.

What I did before that has no excuse either.

I wish I could tell you the marriage was fake, because then maybe you’d hate me cleanly.

It wasn’t.

That is what makes me ashamed.

I loved you, and I still became the man who hurt you.

I hope someday you live somewhere my name never enters the room before you do.

I cried harder over that letter than I had cried over the divorce decree.

Because monsters are easy.

People are not.

Adrian was capable of tenderness.

He once sat beside my father’s hospital bed for eleven hours.

He made terrible pancakes every birthday because I loved terrible pancakes.

He drove three hours in a snowstorm to retrieve a necklace I left at a hotel.

And he hit me.

He deceived me.

He participated in a plan to control my assets.

All of those facts existed in the same human being.
