My Husband Beat Me for Refusing to Live With My Mother in Law.

Sometimes they look perfect.

Sometimes the woman is laughing because she was actually happy that day.

Sometimes the man has his hand around her waist because he loved the camera.

I opened the frame.

Removed the photograph.

Then stopped.

A memory surfaced.

Our first meeting.

Seven years earlier.

A charity dinner in Manhattan.

Adrian sitting beside me because, he claimed, somebody had changed the place cards.

He had asked about Vermont.

I had laughed.

“How do you know I love Vermont?”

“Lucky guess.”

Then he mentioned a tiny used bookstore in Woodstock.

Baker & Pine.

My father used to take me there every autumn.

Almost nobody knew that.

I had stared at Adrian and thought—

Fate.

I put the photograph down.

Daniel’s warning returned.

The original email chain.

In the chaos after the assault, I had not opened it.

Rebecca had.

When I asked about it, she kept saying, “When you’re ready.”

I suddenly knew I was ready.

Or as ready as anyone ever becomes to meet the ghost of their own life.

I called her.

“I want the emails.”

Silence.

“Eleanor.”

“Send them.”

“Read them with someone.”

“No.”

“Please.”

I looked at the wedding photograph.

“Send them.”

They arrived five minutes later.

Seven years old.

The first email was from Victoria to Adrian.

Subject: VALE.

I stared at the screen.

Then opened it.

Adrian,

I confirmed the daughter will attend the Keating Foundation dinner Saturday. Eleanor Vale, thirty-two. Stephen Vale’s trust is still intact and structured exactly as Thomas remembered.

She is unmarried.

No siblings.

Do not be obvious.

I stopped reading.

The room seemed to move.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

Another email.

Adrian to Victoria.

What does she like?

Victoria’s response.

Architecture, restoration, old books, Vermont. Her father took her to Woodstock every fall. There’s a bookstore called Baker & Pine she apparently adores.

My hands began shaking.

No.

Another.

Victoria:

I’ve arranged the seating. Charles Keating owes me a favor. She will be at Table 14.

Adrian:

Beside me?

Victoria:

Obviously.

I could hear my own breathing.

The restaurant after the gala.
