PART 1
I don’t usually talk about this, but what happened still doesn’t feel real.
I’m 35.
I came home from military service with a prosthetic leg and one single thought keeping me alive the whole time—my wife, Brenda, and our newborn twin girls.
I didn’t tell her I was coming early. I wanted to surprise her.
Instead… I opened the door to a house that wasn’t ours anymore.
Empty walls. Bare floors. No furniture. Just silence.
Then—crying upstairs.
I dragged myself up the steps to the nursery and found my daughters crying in their cribs.
And my mother—shaking, completely exhausted—trying to comfort them both.
“Mom?” I said, my voice cracking. “Where’s Brenda?”
She didn’t answer right away. She just kept weeping, repeating, “I’m so sorry… I’m so sorry…”
Then I saw the note left on the dresser.
“I’m too young to waste my life on a broken man and changing diapers. Victor can give me more. As for the babies—keep them.”
