In 2009, 26-year-old John Edward Jones got stuck exploring Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave. He was an experienced spelunker, but one wrong turn led him into a narrow, almost vertical passage just 10 inches wide. As he tried to wriggle through, he became trapped, upside down, with his arms pinned beneath him. No way to move. No way to breathe properly. No way to escape.
Rescue crews worked for hours, even days, fighting against the clock and the crushing pressure on his body. They tried pulleys, drills, anything they could think of. But the rock refused to let go. John died 28 hours later, still wedged in the stone. His body remains in Nutty Putty Cave to this day, sealed behind a permanent closure, a tomb carved into the earth itself
