A teacher called my 7-year-old daughter’s family photo “”inappropriate”” — then the principal looked at it and asked everyone to remain seated.

Last Monday, my daughter’s teacher asked every student to bring in a family photo for a class project.

My seven-year-old, Sophie, was adopted.

She knew she had biological parents before us, and we had always answered her questions gently and honestly. They had both died in a car accident when she was a baby.

That evening, I offered her dozens of pictures from our family albums.

She chose one of us at the beach.

Or at least, that was what I thought.

The next afternoon, the school called.

When I arrived, Sophie’s class was still sitting at their desks.

Her teacher, Mrs. Parker, looked annoyed.

“”Your daughter brought something completely inappropriate for a second-grade project.””

She handed me a folded newspaper clipping.

My stomach dropped.

I had

kept it inside a box on the top shelf of my closet.

It was an article about the accident that killed Sophie’s biological parents.

Beneath the headline was a photograph.

Her mother and father, smiling together.

“”I wanted my first family too,”” Sophie whispered.

My anger disappeared.

Before I could answer, the principal, Mr. Harris, walked in.

Mrs. Parker handed him the clipping.

“”That’s what she brought.””

He glanced at it.

Then stopped.

His eyes returned to the photograph.

He stepped closer to the window and read the article from beginning to end.

“”Where did Sophie get this?””

“”From my house.””

He looked around the classroom.

“”Everyone stay seated.””

Mrs. Parker frowned.

“”Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he took out his phone and photographed one tiny section near the bottom of the clipping.

I had never noticed it before.

Beside the article was part of another photograph, almost

completely cut away when I had saved the story years earlier.

Only half of a man’s face remained.

Mr. Harris stared at it.

Then at Sophie.

He locked the classroom door.
