At exactly 4:30 in the morning, Ryan finally came home.

Claire was standing barefoot on the cold kitchen floor, holding their two-month-old son against her chest while breakfast cooked around her. She had been awake for hours, preparing food for Ryan’s family, trying to make the house look perfect even though she was exhausted.

Then Ryan walked through the front door, looked at her, and said one word.

“Divorce.”

Claire did not cry.

She did not beg him to stay.

She did not ask what she had done wrong.

Instead, she held her baby closer, turned off the stove, packed a suitcase, and walked out before sunrise.

At first, Ryan and his family probably believed she was simply leaving in shock.

They had no idea what Claire was taking with her.

And they certainly had no idea what she would discover before the sun was fully up.

The front door opened at exactly 4:30 a.m., and the sound traveled through the quiet house like a warning bell.

Claire stood beneath the dim kitchen lights with her son sleeping against her chest. The baby had cried so long during the night that his tiny voice had become hoarse.

The kitchen smelled of roasted chicken, garlic, and coffee that had been sitting in the pot for far too long.

Claire had been cooking since midnight.

Ryan’s parents were expected to arrive early, and in the Calloway family, a good wife was expected to make exhaustion look effortless.
