My newborn twins had Down syndrome, so I left them in the hospital… But before I got to my car, a nurse ran after me screaming, “WAIT! WHAT THEY TOLD YOU ABOUT YOUR BABIES IS NOT THE WHOLE TRUTH!” 😱💔

“Can I charge them?”

The nurse nodded.

A few moments later I was sitting in a chair, with a newborn woman leaning on either side of my chest.

They were so light.

So warm.

So incredibly small.

Baby B turned her head toward her.

That was it.

Just a tiny move.

But it destroyed me.

“I almost allowed someone to separate them,” I whispered.

Brian was standing at the door.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I looked up sharply.

“Did you know?”

“Know what?”

“That someone wanted only one of them.”

His face paled.

“No.”

I believed him.

But she was still furious.

With him.

With me herself.

With everybody.

Especially with myself.

“I was afraid,” I whispered.

Brian came over.

“Me too.”

“I thought leaving meant admitting I couldn’t do this.”

He swallowed saliva.

“What do you think now?”

I looked at my daughters.

“I think I made a permanent decision while going through a temporary panic.”

Less than fifteen minutes later a social worker came in.

She introduced herself as Mrs. Cole.

His expression was calm, but serious.

“I understand that he has changed his mind.”

“Yes.”

“You must understand that you signed resignation documents.”

“I know.”

“And the placement process has already begun.”

“I want him to be stopped.”

He pulled up a chair.

“We will have to review exactly what documents you signed and what you can legally withdraw at this stage.”

My heart was hitting my chest hard.

“So you could still take them off?”

“What I’m saying is that I can’t promise you anything in thirty seconds.”

“Please don’t separate them.”

Mrs. Cole watched me carefully.

“That’s what made her change her mind?”

“No.”

My own response surprised me.

He raised an eyebrow.

I looked down.

“To think they might separate them made me realize something.”

“From what?”

“I still thought of them as mine.”

The room was completely silent.
